For many therapists, counselors, psychologists, social workers...they're thought to be "impervious" to mental illness. They help people with minor depression to raging schizophrenia and at the end of the night they walk away with a smile and live their life just fine. At least, that's what we're lead to think. One example that puts that stigma to rest is Dr. Marsha Linehan, a therapist and researcher at the University of Washington. When she was young, Dr. Linehan had so much anxiety and stress in her life to overcome it and make herself better, she attacked herself by cutting and burning herself all around her body. She ended up being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder which can cause severe harm to an individual. She vowed that as she got older and got treatment that helped her get out of those complications, she would dedicate her time to help individuals get out of the same rut.
